Primary - Tug of War

The Irish Tug of War Association and Cork Sports Partnership have teamed up to develop a Primary School Tug of War Programme. The programme will run across a limited number of Cork primary schools between Easter and the summer holidays.

The aim of the programme is to introduce 3rd & 4th class primary school children (Boys, Girls & Mixed) to the Sport of Tug of War in a supportive environment. In return for full commitment to the programme, each school will receive the following:

  • Coaching Session
  • Tug of War rope
  • Coaching Resource Pack
  • Entry to the Cork Primary Schools Tug of War event on 24th May 2018.
How much does the programme cost?

This programme is valued at over €300 per school and is heavily subsidised by the Irish Tug of War Association and Cork Sports Partnership. The programme will be subsidised by Cork Sports Partnership and the Irish Tug of War Association pending programme funding in 2018.   

Maximum Capacity per School:

30 per class session with a maximum of 3 class sessions (90 children) per school for this phase of the programme.

Steps involved in the Application Process 

Step 1: School registers 3rd & 4th classes to participate in the Primary Schools Tug of War Programme by completing the programme registration form.  

Step 2: Registration will be acknowledged by Cork Sports Partnership.

Step 3: Successful schools will be contacted by Cork Sports Partnership to confirm acceptance on to the programme early 2018 and invoiced to take part. Unsuccessful schools will be placed on a waiting list for future phases of the programme.

Step 4: Following receipt of payment, the Irish Tug of War Association will contact all successful schools to arrange a suitable training day in the school.

Step 5: An Irish Tug of War Association coach will deliver the training session as agreed with school.

Step 6: School Teachers will deliver weekly Tug of War lessons in the lead up to the Tug of War event which will take place on Thursday 24th May 2018 in Neptune Stadium. 

Step 7: Schools will be invited to take part in the Cork Primary Schools Tug of War blitz in May.

Venue 1
  • When: Thursday 19th April 
  • Where: Ballinacarriga Sports Hall, Dunmanway
  • Time: 10am - 2pm

Venue 2
  • When: Thursday 24th May
  • Where: Neptune Stadium
  • Time: 10am - 2pm
