Badminton
The Cork Sports Badminton Programme:
The Cork Sports Partnership has joined forces with Badminton Ireland to deliver a Badminton Basics Programme to 10 schools throughout Cork. The schools were chosen by the Regional Development officer for Badminton Ireland.
The 10 schools taking part in the badminton basics programme are:

- St. Mary`s High School, Midleton
The Sports Partnership have funded the programme which is aimed at encouraging young people to get involved in Badminton on a coaching and participation capacity.
It focuses on enabling young people to get early coaching experience, and in doing so, passing on their basic knowledge to younger players within their school. The Badminton Basics programme is specifically designed to enable Transition Year Students and teachers to deliver basic badminton skills and to organise structured games/competitions 1st - 2nd Year Students within their own schools or even to local primary school students upon completion of the course.
The programme includes:
- 6-hour Badminton Basics coaching course for Transition Year students and PE Teachers which will be held in each school up to a maximum of 30 per class. This course should take place over one 6-hour session or two 3-hour sessions.
- Badminton Basics Handbook and Coaching DVD x 5 per class
- Support and advice from Badminton Ireland Development Officers in implementing the Badminton Basics Programme in each school
There are four key elements to the Badminton Basics Programme:
- The Badminton Basics Coaching Course - This course will give participants coaching basics training in order to introduce badminton to beginners. This should be delivered during school hours by a recommended Badminton Ireland Badminton Basics Tutor
- The Badminton Basics Handbook - Outlines 6 Session Plans that students can work from, as well as the visual aid from the Badminton Basics DVD. Tips on how to Create your own Session Plan is also included
- The Badminton Basics DVD - Contains 6 Coaching Sessions to be used prior to taking a coaching session. Each session only takes 5 minutes to view and participants should use the Badminton Basics Handbook as a further guide throughout the Coaching Session.
- Badminton Basics Transition Year Student Log/Journal -Transition Year Students are asked to complete a Log/Journal on the programme including details on each Coaching Session, organising end of Programme Competition League, practical experiences of coaching etc. The programme is structured in a way that gives Transition Year Students practical coaching experience while at the same time, introduces badminton to younger students within your school
