PUblications

As a part of the GAA sports programme there are 3 programmes currently underway. Cork Sports Partnership in conjunction with the Irish Sports Council, GAA and the Cork County Games Development team, are currently implementing these programmes which are all aimed at increasing participation and improving coach quality around Cork.

The 3 programmes are:

  1. Primary School Games Programme
  2. Mayfield Gaelic Academy
  3. Coaching and Club Development in Western Duhallow

Primary School games Programme:

Aims:

  • Increase participation in Gaelic games among children aged 8-11
  • Increase the number of the children taking up refereeing
  • Educate primary school teachers on running games programmes

Objectives:

  • Create a fun non threatening environment for children to play Gaelic games
  • Identify children that do not play regularly and link them with their local clubs
  • Linking schools with local clubs to sustain participation
  • Discuss with teachers how to run these games programmes
  • Create an opportunity for children to referee games

Target participation:

  • Over 2,000 children to participate in the programme
  • 260 primary schools invited to attend.

The programme will be delivered by the County Games Manager and the Games Development Administrators along with Sciath na Scol. The Cork Sports Partnership has funded a percentage of this programme and will be working with the County Games Manager and Development officers to ensure this project is successful and will offer any other support that is needed in order to ensure the continued development of GAA in Cork.

Mayfield Gaelic Academy


Aims:

  • Increase number of boys playing Gaelic games in the Mayfield area
  • Increase the number and quality of coaches in the area
  • Increase club involvement from non playing members


Objectives:

  • Encourage the participation in Gaelic games to boys and teenagers in the Mayfield area
  • Improve quality of club coaches
  • Introduce young people to coaching
  • Link club with the community and traditionally non participating areas
  • Break social barriers to GAA in Mayfield.

Target participation:

  • 7-16 year olds
  • Non participating areas in and around Mayfield

The programme will be supported by the County Games team and the Cork Sports Partnership. The Sports Partnership will be providing equipment for the successful development of the programme and any other support that may be needed, while the County Games team will be delivering the programme of coaching for the club ensuring all aims of the programme are achieved.

Western Duhallow Hurling Development:


This programme aims to create an opportunity for clubs not participating in hurling to avail of coaching and expose children aged from under 8 to under 12 the opportunity to take part in hurling camps and small sided blitzes. This programme will be delivered by the County Games Manager and development officers. The Cork Sports partnership is supporting this programme by supplying equipment for its delivery.

Aims:

  • Establish an additional hurling club from clubs not playing hurling.

Objectives:

  • Establish U8, U10 & U12 coaching sessions within clubs that do not field hurling teams
  • Educate club members on how to coach hurling.

Target Participation:

  • 300 children U8, U10, U12
  • Non traditional hurling areas (Ballydesmond, Boherbue, Cullen, Kiskeam, and Knocknagree)

This programme is being supported by the Sports Partnership by providing equipment needed for the execution of the programme. The County Games Manager and Development Officers will delivery the programme to the target groups.
