Cork Sports Munster Rugby Programme

Cork Sports Partnership in conjunction with the Irish Sports Council, and Munster Rugby has teamed up to implement 2 new rugby projects for Cork. These projects are aimed at increasing participation and awareness of rugby in areas where participation rates are low. Both programmes offer ongoing support as well as initial training, which will strengthen the impact of the programmes.


The Stand Alone Project:

Aims:

  • Increase participation in Rugby
  • Increase the number and quality of coaches responsible for or interested in looking after schools/community Rugby
  • Educate parents, teachers, and volunteers involved or looking to be involved in Rugby


Objectives:

  • To train individuals to deliver Tag Rugby and provide them with equipment
  • Identify potential Rugby mentors in targeted areas
  • Ongoing support in educating prospective mentors, organising refresher courses and blitz days
  • Facilitate links with local clubs to provide a pathway to ensure ongoing participation in Rugby and help develop those club/school/community links.

Target Group:

  • Schools and community groups in areas with low participation
  • Douglas, Carrigaline, Crosshaven, Clonakilty, Dunmanway, Bantry, Skibbereen, Mitchelstown, Fermoy, Ballincollig, Midleton, Cobh, Youghal, Kanturk, Mallow, Bandon


The Cork Sports Partnership will be working with the Community Development Officer of Munster Rugby in delivering this project. This support will be in the form of equipment packs for the areas targeted and additional support and promotion where it’s needed.


The Girls Rugby Roadshow project:


Aim:

  • Increase participation and awareness in girls rugby
  • Increase the number and quality of coaches responsible for or interested in looking after girl’s rugby
  • Educate parents, teachers, and volunteers involved or looking to be involved in girl’s rugby.

Objective:

  • Run Skills day, where all clubs/schools in the designated area will be invited to attend introductory days on the basic skills of Rugby
  • Prospective mentors/teachers/parents/volunteers will be invited to attend and follow up will be linked to “Stand Alone” project
  • Facilitate links with local clubs to follow up into school

Target Group:

  • Schools and community groups in areas with low participation
  • Carrigaline, Crosshaven, Cork City North, Skibbereen, Fermoy, Ballincollig, Youghal, Kanturk, Mallow, Bandon
