Sports Ability Day 2009

This years Sports Ability Day took place on 11th of July and was a fantastic opportunity to see the great variety of sports and physical activity available to people with disability in Cork. The Sports Ability Day took place in the CIT Sports Hall, Cork and showcased all the excellent activities that are on hand in Cork for all to enjoy.

"The event was open to anyone who shares an interest in adapted sports and physical activity" noted Sinead Costello, Sports Inclusion Disability Officer with the County Cork Sports Partnership. "The concept was and still is to encourage people to come out and participate, make new friends and have lots of fun. We demonstrated that, regardless of ability, there is a sport out there for everyone to get involved in. We have it all, from soccer, to wheelchair rugby, to cycling, to wheelchair basketball, to Boccia and more, and importantly, they are all available in Cork."

The array of indoor and outdoor sports was impressive. Indoor Powerchair Football, a 4 – a – side power wheelchair game and Futsal Soccer, an indoor scaled down version of soccer, kicked off the activities at 12:00pm with Tandem and hand cycling. This was followed by Wheelchair Rugby and Special Olympics Soccer at 12:30pm. Half an hour later, it was time for Gymnastics, Golf and Road Bowling. Boccia and Bocce were featured at 1:30pm along with Table Tennis and Badminton. 2:00pm saw the Junior Sports, showcasing a range of games and sports for children with a physical disability. The final events of the day were Wheelchair Basketball and Dance Connect, which is a movement class for children with autism and related learning difficulties.

The showcase was of tremendous interest to the many organisations in Cork who work with people with a disability. The Irish Wheelchair Association, Special Olympics Munster, People with Disabilities in Ireland, the Cope Foundation, the National Learning Network and the National Council for the Blind are among many of the organisations who set up stands on the day.
