Sports Inclusion Disability Programme (SIDP)

The Cork Sports Partnership launched its Sports Inclusion Disability Programme (SIDP) in April 2008. The Partnership appointed a Sports Inclusion Disability Officer (SIDO) with an aim to increase the participation of people with disabilities in sport, fitness and physical activity in Cork. This is achieved through working in partnership with statutory agencies, sports clubs, community groups, facility providers, schools, disability service providers and people with disabilites.

Objectives:

  • Sustainable Participation: To support sustainable sport and physical activity participation opportunities for people with disabilities through the provision of quality initiatives, engaging with the existing clubs and the wider community.
  • Partnerships: To create effective partnerships to underpin the development of sustainable participation for people with disabilities in sport and physical activity. e.g. Cork SportsAbility Forum.

  • Capacity Building: To encourage sports clubs and volunteers to support the participation of people with disabilities in sport and physical activity through the facilitation of training and education thus creating awareness of Adapted Physcial Activity. e.g. Disability Inclusion Training (DIT).

  • Awareness: To provide information and promote all opportunities for people with disabilities to participate in sustainable sport and physical activity at local, regional and national level. e.g. Cork Sports Partnership Ezine/Website/Facebook Page.

The SIDP is coordinated nationally by the CARA APA Centre, the national resource centre which is based in the Institute of Technology, Tralee, Co. Kerry. The CARA Centre has two main objectives:

  • To lead, coordinate and support the developments of sport, physical activity and physical education for people with disabilities in Ireland.
  •  To coordinate, advocate and facilitate for the inclusion of people with disabilities in sport, physical activity and physical education in Ireland.
