Rebel Kids Make a Splash!

Tuesday 11 April 2017

Over 300 children from 21 Cork primary schools took part in the recent Splash and Dash Aquathlon series with Cork Sports Partnership and Triathlon Ireland. The events took place in the three Cork venues of Fermoy Leisure Centre, Dunmanway Swimming Pool and Gus Healy Swimming Pool, Douglas before the Easter break.

Anna Grealish, Munster Development Officer, Triathlon Ireland outlined the fantastic response to these events in Cork. “The series has proved highly popular among Cork schools with over 800 children taking part in since the first event in October 2015. She added “The events aim to provide 5th & 6th class children with a fun introduction to a multi discipline sport in a supportive environment which is an important part of Triathlon Ireland’s participation strategy”.

Each event wave began with a safety briefing for participants and teachers. The event itself comprised of a 50m swim followed by a quick transition into running gear and a 400 metre run around the adjoining park.

Speaking at one of the recent events, Maurice O' Sullivan, Sports Development and Marketing Officer with the Cork Sports Partnership said “We are delighted by the turn out at the Splash & Dash series. It is fantastic to see so many children get the opportunity to take part in a new activity. From speaking to teachers, parents and participants, the feedback has been overwhelming positive and it is something we hope will become a regular fixture in the school calendar”.

He added “Cork Sports Partnership is working closely with a number of National Governing Bodies of Sport (NGB’s) to provide opportunities for people of all ages and abilities to get involved in sport on a regular basis. Potentially these collaborative projects have far reaching impacts in terms of increasing participation levels which we hope we will be able to replicate with additional programmes and events in the not too distant future.”
