Looking for a NEW WATER SPORT in 2016?

Cork Sports Partnership (CSP) has teamed up with the Cork Underwater Hockey Club (Cork UHC) and the Irish Underwater Council to bring an introductory snorkelling and underwater hockey skills programme to Cork. The course will introduce adult participants to snorkelling, as well as teach the rules and skills required to play underwater hockey.

Underwater Hockey is a fun non-contact team sport played along the bottom of a swimming pool. Teams are made up of 6 players in the water and 4 rolling substitutes throughout a match, which typically can last 25 minutes. The aim of the game is to score goals by pushing a plastic coated lead puck through a metal trough on the bottom of the pool.

Maurice O Sullivan, Sports Development and Marketing Officer with the CSP said “The Sports Partnership is delighted to support the Cork Underwater Hockey Club on this programme. The club has worked hard to create more awareness of the underwater hockey and towards creating more opportunities for people interested in water sports and activities to get involved in the sport. This programme will give people a great and supportive introduction to the skills required to play the game.

Currently there are 5 teams playing in Ireland including 2 university teams. The Cork UHC introductory programme will take place on Monday’s from 8:45 pm in Brookfield Swimming Pool on College Road. All playing equipment will be provided for people to try their hand at the new sport.

Eamonn Mullally, Cork UHW said, “we are really looking forward to getting this introductory programme up and running in Brookfield Pool in January. People often feel apprehensive about just turning up to the pool on a training night so this intro course will help get rid of that barrier as everyone will be new and in the same boat”. He added “the course will cover fitness drills, skills drills, snorkelling/finning skills and game time throughout the 6 weeks with all participants progressing at their own level”.
