Urban Outdoor Adventure Initiative

The 'Urban Outdoor Adventure Initiative' aims to create and enhance outdoor recreation opportunities for people with disabilities and youth groups in Cork City. This project is funded through Sport Ireland Dormant Accounts Fund and guided by the Sport Ireland Sport & Physical Activity in the Outdoors Policy.

This Urban Outdoor Initiative is coordinated by Cork Sports Partnership in association with the following partner organisations; Cork Education and Training Board, Cork City Council, Cork Healthy Cities, IWA Sport, COPE Foundation, Foroige and Youth Work Ireland. Together this working group consulted with key stakeholders to design a suite of programmes to meet the interests and needs of the target group. 

The below programme of activities aims to support youth and people with a disability to enjoy sport and physical activity opportunities along the River Lee. The focus for the current initiative will focus on the following:

  1. Bádoireacht
  2. Cycling 
  3. Kayaking
  4. Yoga 
  5. Angling
  6. Orienteering 

Bádoireacht - Youth Rowing Programme 

  • Delivered in partnership with Meitheral Mara 
  • Who: Youth aged 12-24yrs
  • Duration: 6 Week Programme Delivered one session per week 
  • Dates: Commencing Wednesday 30th Sept until Wednesday 28th Oct 
  • Event: Youth Culminating Event will take place on Satursday 31st October

Learn To Cycle 

  • Who: Children and Teens with Disabilities
  • Aimed to assist children and teens to learn to cycle independently 
  • Duration: 6 Week Programme
  • Location: Holy Cross School, Mahon
  • Dates: Commencing Wednesday 16th Sept until Wednesday 21st Oct

  • As part of the Sport Inclusion Programme, Cork Sports Partnership have handcycles available for rental. 
  • Handcycles are powered by the arms and support people with reduced mobility to enjoy cycling. See details HERE

  • Delivered in partnership with Kinsale OEC and Cork Training and Education Board
  • Who: Youth Groups in Cork City 
  • Duration: 6 week programme delivered one session per week
  • Day & Time: Wednesday 2-4pm
  • Dates: Beginning Wednesday 7th, 14th, 21st Oct, 4th, 11th, 18th November

  • Who: People with a disability  
  • Duration: 6 week programme delivered one session per week
  • Programme 1: Wednesday 11-1pm
    • Dates include: Wednesday 7th, 14th, 21st Oct, 4th, 11th, 18th November  
    • Open to adults with intellectual disabilities

  • Programme 2: Thursday 11-1pm
    • Dates include: Thursday 8th, 15th, 22nd Oct, 5th, 12th, 19th November  
    • Open to adults with physical disabilities

  • Delivered in partnership with Alchemy School of Yoga and Headway
  • Who: People with a Brain Injury   
  • Duration: 12 week programme delivered one session per week

  • Delivered in partnership with Himalaya Yoga Valley and Down Syndrome Cork Field of Dreams
  • Who: Adults with Intellectual disabilities 
  • Duration: 6 week programme delivered one session per week Wednesday 10-11am

  • Delivered in partnership with Glanmire Salmon & Trout Anglers Association 
  • This programme will aim to provide Angling Cast Skills Programme Level 1 to Level 3 (Modified)
  • People with a Disability:
    • Programme due to commence 8th October - 20th November (6 Week Duration)
    • Day: Thursday 1:30-3:30pm
