Walking Ideas & Challenges

Walking may be one of the easiest and most effective forms of exercise for Older Adults. Whatever you’re level of mobility, it’s a great way to get active, at your own pace.

In adhering to the national physical activity guidelines, older adults are encouraged to engage in 30 minutes of moderate physical activity on 5 days of the week, and include muscle strengthening and balance activities 2-3 times per week also. Here are some tips to get you walking:

Start stepping - Try work towards the recommended 10,000 steps a day. Step more at home when:

  • Waiting for the kettle to boil.
  • Using the stairs.
  • On the phone.
  • During Ad breaks on TV.
  • Doing the laundry or cleaning around the house.

Get Walking - You can break up your 30 minutes over the day and do short bouts of 10-15 minutes. Why not try this Get Ireland Walking 21 Day Walking Challenge:

  • Download your Walk Challenge Card - Click here >>>
  • Use your home or backgarden, laps around the house or use the 2k from your home to get walking!
  • Log the TIME you spend walking.
  • Good Luck and lets Get Cork Walking!

Please adhere to HSE guidelines on social distancing and stay within 5k of your home when taking on any walking activity.
