Steps for Life 4 Week Physical Activity Programme

Background to the Programme:

The Cork Sports Partnership is teaming up with UCCs Sports Studies and Physical Education Dept to offer Older Adults in Cork a 4 week physical activity programme. The programme is being offered as part of the 4th Year PE & Sports Studies modeule, 'Lifespan Health, Exercise Ageing and Health'. As the Irish population is ageing, within the next 25 years a million people will be 65 and over, we need to be able to adapt our communities to meet the needs of older people. The area of health and wellbeing and in particular physical activity is vitally important in this regard.

As organisations and agencies tasked with promoting and encourageing participation in physical activity and exercise we need to ensure our ever growing ageing population are part of community planning when designing and implementing programmes.

31 Students from the degree in UCC are working with Cork Sports Partnership, fitWALK Ireland and the Health Promotion and Improvement Dept of the HSE to design and develop a 4 week programme that will be offered to 9 communites across Cork in March. The programmes delivered in each community will be also evaluated to ensure any possible benefits/impacts are captured and fed back to the organisations supporting the programme. The current phase of the programme is a pilot with UCC and the Department of Sport Studies and PE and will hopefully create a model that can be replicated on an annual basis.

About the Programme:

The focus of the 4 week programme is mainly around aerobic activites such as stepping and walking, mobilising and strengthening while also working on balance and coordiantion. All these activities will be deliverred in a fun and social environment and open to all abilities. Sessions are 1 hour in lenght and will take place on Thursday evenings for four weeks in local community halls and venues. We are currently looking for volunteers to take part in the programme.
