UCC APE Programme

UCC Adapted Physical Education Programme

Cork Sports Partnership, Irish Wheelchair Association Sport & the HSE teamed up with UCC Sports Studies & Physical Education Department to give third year students the opportunity to deliver an adapted physical education programme to special schools and disability centre around Cork City & County.

Groups of UCC students visited centres/schools for a meet & greet session in early October. They returned to class for a number of weeks where they prepared lesson plans for the four week programme that began in early November.

Over 160 participants were involved in the programme from ten schools and disability centres included QDS Cope Foundation, Aisling Day Centre Brothers of Charity, Scoil Eanna, Sonas Junior School, Scoil Triest Special School, Scoil Bernadette, The North Monastery, The Brook Day Centre, St Marks & St Mary’s On The Hill.

Sports Inclusion Disability Officer with Cork Sports Partnership Padraig Healy said “This is a fantastic initiative where students have the benefit of learning through contact theory, while schools & centres benefit from additional physical activity sessions delivered by young and enthusiastic third level students.”

Disability centres & schools were delighted to be involved in this programme and are already looking forward to next year.
