About Men on the Move

 

What is the Men on the Move programme?

Men on the Move (MOM) is a physical activity programme that is aimed at adult men to get them active, have fun and improve fitness levels.

It involves:

  • weekly physical activity sessions over 12 weeks that are led by a qualified instructor to meet your needs.
  • structured physical activity sessions so that you can find a level and pace that suits you.

BACKGROUND

The aim of the Men on the Move programme is to improve the physical fitness and overall health and well-being of adult men in Ireland. The programme was first ran in Mayo in 2013. The programme started in Cork in 2015. 

As part of the programme the HSE along with Waterford IT, IT Carlow and the Centre for Men’s Health, Leeds evaluate the programme. Cork Sports Partnership was involved in this National Research Evaluation of the Men on the Move Project along with 7 other Sports Partnerships across the country. Three areas in Cork were invovled in the initial research evaluation, Dunmanway, Inniscarra, and Ballyhea where over 100 men took part in the evaluation. The full evaluation of the research can be found below.

FITNESS CHECK

At the outset of each programme participants are measured for weight, height, BMI, waist circumference and also complete a one mile timed walk/run. These measurements are taken again 12 weeks later. You will also recieve health information from professionals and a copy of the Men on the Move health information booklet.
