European Cycling Challenge 2017, 1st – 31st May

The European Cycling Challenge is a fun cycling event that is happening during the month of May. It is the biggest urban cycling challenge in Europe and anyone can join, whether cycling to work, school, shopping or for leisure.

It all started in Bologna, Italy in 2011 and each year the number of city areas taking part is growing. Last year 52 urban areas across Europe participated. For 2017, the Cork Metropolitan Area has registered along with a number of other Irish cities.

The Cork Metropolitan Area includes the city, suburbs and includes Ballincollig, Blarney, Carrigaline, Carrigtwohill, Midleton, Cobh, Little Island, Watergrasshill and Whitegate so if you cycle anywhere within this area all your cycle trips add to the final total for Cork. In 2016, Dublin took part and had one thousand participants.

This is the first time Cork has joined the challenge and we are competing not alone with Dublin, Limerick, Galway and Waterford but with other urban areas across Europe as well. When participants join the Cork team they sign up to the Naviki App, which is free and tracks their trips. GPS data generated during the challenge may be useful in informing decisions on future investment in cycling infrastructure. And if you don’t have a Smartphone, you can manually insert your bike-trips. It is possible to insert manually up to 6 trips per day.

It is possible to join a workplace, club or community sub-team once that sub-team has been registered – to register a sub-team please contact the Cork coordinator anita_lenihan@corkcity.ie.

It is easy to keep track of team and personal progress through leader boards and this is where the competitive element comes in. For further information see www.cyclingchallenge.eu
