Cork Rebel Tour Update

Wednesday 03 April 2019

The Future of the Cork Rebel Tour

The organisers of the Cork Rebel Tour have completed a review of the event over the past few months. This review included a number of key considerations including; event environment and demand, our role in the development of cycling, increasing costs, as well as exploration of potential new opportunities for cycling in Cork. With this in mind, the Cork Rebel Tour will not take place in 2019.

While the team understands the disappointing nature of this news, Cork Sports Partnership (CSP) is excited to continue supporting the development of other cycling initiatives in Cork in line with our Active Cork Strategy 2018 – 2022.

CSP will continue to develop, support and promote participation in cycling as a key component of our work in collaboration with our key cycling partners throughout this strategy.

In 2019, this will include coordinating and supporting a number of locally organised events including; 70+ events as part of National Bike Week as well as the coordination of Cycle Right training for primary schools, Learn to Cycle for people with disabilities and Bike for Life for adults looking to get back on the bike. CSP will also continue to work with local clubs and communities to increase participation in their clubs and communities through targeted interventions.

We would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who supported The Cork Rebel Tour over the past 10 years including our CSP Team, partner agencies, sponsors, local community groups/clubs, volunteers and everyone who took part. Without your support, the event would not have been a success.

Throughout the lifetime of the Cork Rebel Tour, over 15,000 cyclists took to the roads of Cork as part of the event. From humble beginnings in Mallow in 2009 with 500 participants, moving to Cork City for three years growing to over 1,200 participants in 2012, to the past 6 years in West Cork, on the beautiful Beara Peninsula, where in 2016 and 2017 2,500 cyclists took part, we hope you enjoyed it as much as we did.

A sincere thank you to all.
