Upcoming Cork Sports Partnership Projects

Tuesday 09 June 2020

With the recent announcement regarding Ireland’s accelerated roadmap to reopening on June 8th, there is some positive news on the sport and physical activity front for communities across Cork. Keeping in mind the importance of remaining compliant with government and HSE guidelines, there has been further space provided to resume sport and activity as the Country continues down the path of returning to some form of normality. Most National Governing Bodies of Sport have now published their roadmaps to resumption of sport with actions plans being put in place by clubs and communities all over Cork to ensure a safe return to play for those involved in sport and physical activity.

Since the onset of the lockdown, albeit working from different locations around the county, it has been business as usual for the Cork Sports Partnership (CSP) team who have been finding new ways to serve the communities of Cork effectively by creating opportunities for people to increase their activity levels, continue learning and get involved in a number of challenges all from the comfort of their own homes.

Activities included in the ‘Keep Cork Active’ resource, available at www.activecork.ie, have been accessed over 100,000 times since the launch of the resource on April 8th. This has provided people of all ages and abilities with a variety of opportunities to keep active while restrictions have been in place. The CSP team also recently published a schedule of 39 upcoming projects which include online and face to face programmes, events and education workshops to further support people to keep active as restrictions begin to ease around the Country.

Speaking about the schedule and upcoming projects, Maurice O’Sullivan, Sport and Marketing Manager with CSP said “We are delighted to announce our upcoming schedule of sport and physical activity opportunities. The CSP team has been working hard behind the scenes with many of our partners to ensure we create as many safe opportunities as possible for people to engage and participate in sport and physical activity over the coming weeks and months. We expect this to increase significantly over the coming months as restrictions continue to ease and more sport and physical activity can resume”.

One project already underway is CSP’s online ‘Couch to 3Km’ programme where over 100 people signed up to complete the tutor supported training programme which started on Monday 8th June. “The response to Couch to 3k programme has been fantastic and shows that the people of Cork have an appetite for these beginner style programmes. The goal of the programme is to encourage and support participants to achieve their goal of completing a 3km walk or run in 6 weeks’ time”.

He added “We are also excited about a number of new project collaborations starting over the new few weeks which include a Family Boxing Programme in conjunction with the Irish Amateur Boxing Association, a Family Orienteering Series with the Irish Orienteering Association as well as a number of cycling related projects. We are also proceeding with a virtual Cork Walking Week from 21st – 28th June where we are encouraging communities all over Cork to come out and join us in celebrating the best of what their localities have to offer through walking”.
