Míde - Women In Sport Survey

Despite the growing popularity of women’s sports, significant gaps remain in female participation, leadership, and research in physical activity. The Míde Research Group is conducting a public survey to guide and set priorities for their areas of research

Key Findings from the Research

  1. Underrepresentation in Research – Only 6% of sports science studies focus exclusively on women, leading to a lack of tailored knowledge on female athletes’ needs.
  2. Participation Gap – Girls and women are less likely to engage in sports due to social, cultural, and structural barriers.
  3. Leadership Disparities – Women hold fewer coaching and administrative roles in sports organizations, limiting their influence on policy and development.

Why This Matters
The exclusion of women from sports research and leadership perpetuates inequalities, affecting performance, health outcomes, and career opportunities. Addressing these gaps can lead to:

  • Better-designed training and nutrition programs for female athletes.
  • Increased visibility and investment in women’s sports.
  • More role models to inspire the next generation of girls in sport.
