4 Week School Athletics Programme

Primary Schools

Athletics Ireland and Cork Sports Partnership have teamed up to roll out the successful Primary School Athletics Programme in 2024 through Healthy IrelandCork City Council and Cork County Council.

The aim of the programme is to introduce 3rd class primary school children (Boys, Girls & Mixed) to the Sport of Athletics in a supportive environment. In return for full commitment to the programme, each school will receive a 4 week Coaching Session, Athletics Resource Pack and FREE Entry to the Cork Primary Schools Athletics event.

For 2024 the Primary Schools Athletics Events will be split into regions (ie West Cork, East Cork, North Cork & City).

This programme is valued at over €400 per school and is heavily subsidised by Cork Sports Partnership. The programme will cost each school €150 per class group of 30 to take part in which will be payable upon acceptance to the programme.

Agility, Balance, Co-ordination
  • The Athletics programme introduces young children to athletics in a fun, engaging and non-competitive environment.
  • It focuses on the use of games to develop fitness whilst enhancing agility, co-ordination and balance – all fundamental to longer term physical athletic development.
  • Children will partake in running, jumping, relays, hurdles, shotput, javelin, discus and more.

Steps involved in the Application Process

Step 1: School registers its 3rd class to participate in the Primary Schools Athletics Programme by completing the programme registration form.

Step 2: Registration will be acknowledged by Cork Sports Partnership.

Step 3: Successful schools will be contacted by Cork Sports Partnership to confirm acceptance on to the programme and invoiced €150 per school group (max 30) to take part. Unsuccessful schools will be placed on a waiting list for future phases of the programme.

Step 4: Following receipt of payment, the Athletics coach will contact all successful schools to arrange a suitable training day in the school.

Step 5: The Athletics coach will deliver the 4 training sessions as agreed with school starting in early March.

Step 6: School Teachers will deliver weekly Athletics lessons in the lead up to the Athletics event  in a Cork venue. In the event that a large number of schools are located in the same area of Cork, an alternative venue/blitz day may be arranged to minimise travel.

Step 7: Schools will be invited to take part in the Primary Schools Athletics blitz.
