Active Cities

The Active Cities project is funded by Sport Ireland through the Dormant Accounts Fund (DAF).

The project is being initiated and developed by 8 Local Sports Partnerships across the 5 largest cities in ROI (Cork, Dublin, Galway, Limerick & Waterford) in conjunction with identified local and national stakeholder organisations.

Guided by the four guiding principles of the Global Action Plan for Physical Activity (GAPPA) developed by the World Health Organisation (WHO) in 2018, Active Cities will strive to create social norms about the benefits of sport and physical activity, create opportunities for people of all ages and abilities to be active, work in partnership to increase physical activity & decrease inactivity, and create/maintain environments where sport & physical activity can happen, working toward healthier lifestyles of their citizens.

Vision: The vision of an Active City is to engage, maintain and increase the number of citizens, regardless of age and ability, participating in sport and physical activity in their city.

Mission: The mission of Active Cities is to create the opportunity for citizens to lead healthier lifestyles in the context of sport & physical activity.

Rationale: Currently, only 42% of adults and 13% of children in Ireland meet the National Physical Activity Guidelines* (ISM mid-year, 2021), and with over 33% of the Irish population living across the 5 cities, there is a clear need to establish an Active Cities project in Ireland.
