Secondary Schools

The Cork Sports Partnership is offering secondary schools, youth services & organisations in Cork the opportunity to avail of the Level 1 Award in Sports Leadership (SL1), a UK based qualification now delivered through the Local Sports Partnerships. 

About Sports Leader UK:

Sports Leaders UK awards and qualifications equip young people  with employability skills for life improving motivation, self-esteem,  communication, team work and confidence. Leadership volunteering  is a vital part of all our courses allowing young people to practice and build their skills in order to ‘Give More. Become More.’ to improve employability. Sports Leader UK partnered with Sport Ireland back in 2015 to roll out the first phase of courses in Ireland through local sports partnerships.  It continues to be a success with courses being delivered through a variety of organisations such as schools, youth projects, clubs and other partnerships. In Cork alone since 2015 over 100 yough leaders have been trained in the SL1 course.

Currently the SL1 Award is the only award available with plans to bring other awards on board in the near future.

About the SL1 Qualification in Sports Leadership:

The Sports Leader Award Scheme is a recognised programme of leadership qualifications, designed with today’s education landscape in mind and is the perfect way to empower your students with the leadership skills that they need in order to succeed. Students will learn and hone their skills in communication & leadership and boost their confidence to become more employable and help lead others. In doing so your school will benefit from creating a cohort of young leaders who can be role models for other students and improve you school’s standing in the local community.In 2016, independent research showed 68% of tutors believed delivering sports leadership qualifications improved attainment in other subjects.

The minimum age of learners required to take part in this qualification is 12yrs. 

SL1 Qualification in Sports Leadership overview:

Once qualified, your learners will be able to assist in the delivery of enjoyable and purposeful sport or physical activity sessions under direct supervision.

  • Learn how to plan and deliver a structured sport/physical activity session
  • Know how to assist in the delivery of a sport/ physical activity session
  • Ability to review a sport/ physical activity session

Critera required to avail of the SL1 Qualification in Sports Leadership:

  • 15 -20 Transition Year Students selected by you through an application process.
  • Training will take place in the school’s sports hall for 9 x 2hr block sessions(meeting the required tutor time of 18hrs) Alternatively the school/organisation can decide how to accumulate the 18hrs.
  • A teacher must be present and attend all sessions.
  • We have 3 Sports Leader tutors that are available to facilitate this training. Please indicate which days/times would suit your school. We will try accommodate your preferred times.
  • Cost: A learner registration fee of €20/participant to be paid to Cork Sports Partnership on acceptance to the course. The course is already heavily subsidised by Sport Ireland and Cork Sports Partnership.
