Buttevant Gaelic 4 Mothers And Others

Buttevant G4MO was set up a group of likeminded ladies from Buttevant who were discussing their health and fitness one day in the playground.

They all agreed that there isn’t much in the community for busy mothers and having seen the success of mothers and other groups in neighboring clubs they said that they would advertise and see if there would be enough people interested! They felt that the ethos of the Mothers and Others was appealing as its noncompetitive and for women of similar age groups – you show up when you can and there is no pressure on anyone! They were blown away by the response! They held an information meeting in late November and set out to start training in January 2024.

It has gone from there and they now have 40 members registered. The Ladies train every Wednesday night and have a great number training each week. They always make the training sessions fun. It’s a great way for them to get an hour out of the house each week to have a laugh and also get some exercise while learning the skills of Gaelic football.

As they are a new club Sharon and Sarah reached out to Cork Sports Partnership looking for any help possible. Maurice O Sullivan, Sports and Marketing Manager, was delighted to help. Providing them with a G4M&O starter pack of Gaelic footballs, bibs, and cones.

“Due to not having a LGFA club in Buttevant we had no access to equipment, so we are extremely grateful to Cork Sports Partnership for supporting us by means of equipment.”

After meeting with the members of the Buttevant Gaelic 4 Mothers and Others they were asked to give reasons as to why they joined and what they are enjoying the most. Here are a few responses from the Ladies:

“I am delighted to be apart of the Buttevant Gaelic for mothers and others. I joined the group to get to know more people in Buttevant having moved to the area a few years ago and to get more physically active. I am thoroughly enjoying being apart of the group. I particularly enjoy getting out in the fresh air each Wednesday night, having a chat with others and getting the body moving. The G4MOs is such a wonderful opportunity for people to connect all why exercising and I look forward to many more nights attending the group as well as the many matches to come.”

“I joined Buttevant G4MO basically as I wanted to challenge myself. I had never played GAA Football before and it was an opportunity to show that you can take up a new skill at any age and have the craic at the same time. I am loving the exercise, the hour to myself, for myself. I enjoy meeting the girls, some of which I had not seen in years and of course making new friends also.”

Cork Sports Partnership were delighted to support the start up of a new group with playing equipment. We would like to wish the Buttevant G4M&O group all the best in the year to come!
