Active Cities Cork

Active Cities Cork

Since late 2020, CSP has been working with Sport Ireland and 7 Local Sports Partnerships to initiate & develop the concept of a national Active Cities approach across 5 cities in Ireland. The cities included in the project are Cork, Dublin, Limerick, Galway and Waterford.

The project which is funded by Sport Ireland through the Dormant Account Fund is being built on the 4 pillars of the Global Action Plan for Physical Activity (GAPPA) developed by the World Health Organisation (WHO) in 2018.

GAPPA Pillars:

  • Active Systems (Cooperation & Partnership)
  • Active Environments (Places & Spaces)
  • Active Societies (Knowledge & Awareness)
  • Active People (Programmes & Events)

Vision: The vision of an Active City is to engage, maintain and increase the number of citizens, regardless of age and ability, participating in sport and physical activity in their city.

Mission: The mission of Active Cities is to create the opportunity for citizens to lead healthier lifestyles in the context of sport & physical activity.

An Active City will strive to create social norms about the benefits of sport and physical activity, create programmes and opportunities for its citizens regardless of ability or age, work in partnership to increase physical activity & decrease inactivity, and create/maintain environments where sport & physical activity can happen, working toward healthier lifestyles of their citizens.

Locally, CSP has engaged with colleagues from over 60 local & national organisations to date across sport, physical activity, community, education, health and active travel to build on partnerships and collaborations to date to expand on work being considered and delivered across the city to improve and enhance opportunities to be active for all.

‘Over the coming weeks and months, we are looking forward to engaging and working with our many partners here in Cork to develop an active city that we can all be proud of. We are currently working with over 60 city-based organisations on different collaborative projects that will enhance opportunities for people of all ages and abilities to get and stay active in our city’.

‘From a national perspective, it is great to be working with Sport Ireland and the other LSPs with a city remit to share learnings and experiences across our local approaches towards the development of the project’. Maurice O’ Sullivan, Sport and Marketing Manager, Cork Sports Partnership
