Tug of War TY Coaching Programme

Irish Tug of War Association and Cork Sports Partnership have teamed up to roll out a Secondary Schools Tug of War Programme. The programme will run across a limited number of Cork Secondary schools throughout the school year.

The aim of the programme is to introduce secondary school pupil (TY’s & 1st & 2nd years) to the Sport of Tug of War in a supportive environment through a peer led programme. 

Following a TY training day (10am – 12pm) delivered on school grounds, the TY students will lead Tug of War sessions for 1st year students in PE classes over 6 sessions supervised by a PE teacher. At the end of the 6 sessions an ITOWA Tutor will assess the TY students run a Mini Blitz in the school with the 1st & 2nd year students they have been working with.

How much does the programme cost?

This programme will cost €50 per school and a School Affiliation of €50. This includes an Irish Tug of War coaching certificate in conjunction with Coaching Ireland along with a resource pack for each student. The programme is heavily subsidised by the Irish Tug of War Association and Cork Sports Partnership.

Steps Involved in the Application Process

Step 1: School registers TY students to participate in the Transition Year Coaching Programme by completing the programme registration form with Cork Sports Partnership (limit of 35 students per class).

Step 2: Registration will be acknowledged by Cork Sports Partnership.

Step 3: Successful schools will be contacted by Cork Sports Partnership to confirm acceptance on to the programme and invoiced €50 and a School Affiliation cost of €50. Unsuccessful schools will be placed on a waiting list for future phases of the programme.

Step 4: Following receipt of payment, The Irish Tug of War Association will contact all successful schools to arrange a suitable training day in the school.

Step 5: Each TY student will receive a two hour coaching course run by a qualified instructor. Following this a community coach will facilitate training sessions in the school.

Step 6: TY students will lead Tug of War sessions for 1st  year students over a 6 week block

Step 7: TY students will run a Mini Blitz in the school with the 1st & 2nd year students they have been working with
